Obituary for Rosalina Colón

Rosalina Colón
Rosalina Colón, aka “Rosa La Mas Hermosa”.

Born February 6 in Magueyes, Barceloneta, Puerto Rico.

She died of complications from Parkinson’s which lead to pneumonia.
Rosalina is one of 7 children born to Arcadia Ayala and Anastacio Colon. She was the only one that ventured out looking for a different life for herself. She was extremely Brave.

She came to NY in the Mid 1950’s…..around the days of “West Side Story” and found work in the fashion industry… ( like Maria and Anita J )

She left work to care for her children, because NO ONE could care for her kids better than she. She trusted no one with her treasures. She was right, there was no better mom. She worried for us til the end. Mom held on a month longer than the Doctor’s expected…she was worried about who would take care of her kids. We reassured her over and over again that we were ok…but she’s a mom, she worried, and no one could care for us better than she.

She had a very good life, of course filled with struggles and sacrifices … All for her kids. She gave us the wonderful life that I think she was hoping to find for herself. She found love and had 3 kids. Later when we were grown, she found love again with our Step Dad, Rene and was with him for more than 20 years….til the end.

Mom loved to crochet and created some of the most beautiful bedspreads, doilies, and potholders as gifts for friends and family. She crocheted skirts for us, hats…everything. She was a wiz with a crochet needle…and NO Pattern needed, she counted the stitches in her head…because she was a numbers wiz…sort of a numbers savant…she only made it to elementary school in Puerto Rico, and did not know math signs like those for addition, division multiplication etc…but she figured out math problems in her head in seconds… she was a genius.

As a cook, another talent that no one could surpass..no recipe needed, she did everything by sight and taste…AWESOME every time…we could never repeat what she made no matter how much we tried…she secretly giggled at that.

A flirt to the very end…Rosa, La Mas Hermosa, so beautiful, so Coqueta, her smile would steal any heart. She proved this over and over again at her favorite ‘hang out’ Don Coqui Restaurant..where a Trio played music every first Sunday of the month, they sang to her, she sang back and she and the lead singer flirt all the time…with songs. Oh didn’t I mention, she had a beautiful voice.

In the end she went with God in her sleep. She was surrounded daily by her her family. We prayed and she prayed with us,,,until the end when she cold only mumble AMEN.

She had three children Francisco Negrón, Elvia Negrón and Cynthia Rivera.

She will live in our hearts forever…Her body is gone, but her spirit will always be with us. You too will see her Everywhere.
